5/9/2008 Peace Corps Wins Best Government Website by The Webby Awards
The Peace Corps Teen Website was awarded the Best Government Website of 2008 by the 12th Annual Webby Awards. During the month of April, online fans around the world cast their votes for the Peace Corps Teen site securing the top Webby People’s Voice Award for the Peace Corps.

5/8/2008 AmeriCorps Week Spotlights 540,000 Alums’ Impact and Sustained Service
The coast-to-coast recognition of AmeriCorps Week, from May 11-18, will spotlight how America’s social entrepreneurs at the national, state and local levels, are tackling high-school dropouts, prisoner re-entry, illiteracy, and other national challenges in partnership with the Federal program that engages Americans in intense citizen service.

5/7/2008 USAID Partners with American Red Cross to Help the Burmese People
The American people, through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), will provide $1 million of the initial $3.25 million in emergency assistance for Burma through the American Red Cross. This assistance will help provide for ongoing community assessments, mobilization and distribution of relief supplies from pre-positioned Red Cross stockpiles, follow-up monitoring and coordination, and the local procurement, transport, and emergency storage of temporary shelter materials.

5/6/2008 USAID Provides Additional $3 Million in Assistance to the Burmese People in Cyclone Aftermath
The American people, through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), are providing an additional $3 million dollars in initial assistance to help meet the most urgent needs of the Burmese people in the aftermath of Cyclone Nargis. The White House announced this additional funding at a press briefing today. This brings the total USAID assistance to $3.25 million to date, which will be allocated by the USAID Disaster Assistance Response Team (DART) that is currently pre-positioned in Bangkok awaiting permission to enter Burma.

5/5/2008 USAID Assists Burmese People in Cyclone Aftermath
The American people, through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), are providing an initial $250,000 for emergency relief assistance to help those who have been affected by Tropical Cyclone Nargis. USAID has also pre-positioned emergency response experts nearby and is prepared to deploy a Disaster Assistance Response Team (DART) to assist the people of Burma.

4/29/2008 President Bush Honors American’s Armies of Compassion During National Volunteer Week Celebration
On Tuesday, April 29, 2008, the White House celebrated National Volunteer Week in the East Room. President Bush welcomed the attendees, saying, "I am pleased to welcome volunteers from around the United States who have given of their time to help those who need help, and we're sure glad you're here. Those of you today who perform acts of kindness do so out of love, and you do so out of a desire not to be recognized -- but anyway, you're going to be recognized. We have the opportunity today to thank you, and the opportunity today to celebrate the difference that volunteers have made all across America." USA Freedom Corps Director Henry Lozano today joined President Bush for a White House celebration of National Volunteer Week, honoring Americans who give of their time to help the less fortunate and create impact in communities at home and around the globe. During an East Room ceremony, President Bush recognized 33 Peace Corps trainees preparing to leave for Guatemala and thanked them for dedicating their lives to serving others. This tradition of hosting Peace Corps volunteers for a formal White House send-off before the trainees leave for their service has been continued by every sitting President since Richard Nixon.

4/29/2008 President Bush Hosts Peace Corps Volunteers at the White House
President George W. Bush met today with 33 Peace Corps Volunteers at a special White House send-off event in honor of the 2008 National Volunteer Week. Peace Corps Country Directors from 65 overseas posts were also present.

4/28/2008 President’s Council Thanks Youth Volunteers During National Volunteer Week
On April 28, 2008, Actor Stephen Baldwin, singer Michael W. Smith, and other members of the President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation joined White House officials and nonprofit leaders at a Boys & Girls Club in Southeast Washington to highlight the importance of youth service and recognizing youth volunteers. Youth members of the BGCGW FBR Keystone Club were presented with the President’s Volunteer Service Award for their exemplary community service project “Capitol Hill Takeover.” On April 28, 2008, more than 40 nonprofit and government organizations joined forces with the President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation, USA Freedom Corps, Boys & Girls Club of Greater Washington (BGCGW), and the Corporation for National and Community Service to celebrate National Volunteer Week and the commitment of America’s youth to volunteer service.
